On our first trip we were in Thailand 17 days, the original idea was to spend a few days in Bangkok and go up north stopping in Ayutthaya and Sukkothai, but our plan had to change due to the great floods that the country was suffering, so finally we focused only on the north visiting the cities of Chiang Mai, Pai, Lampang Y Chiang Rai.

ITINERARY

This is the map with the route we did. You can see the article of each city by clicking on the chinchetita 🙂

OUR ITEMS

These are the articles we have written about these destinations.

But you will find all the articles we have written about Thailand (which are many) if you click here.

BUDGET

Thailand, if you travel as a backpacker, it is extremely cheap. During our stay the exchange rate was: € 1 = 41.64 baht. In total we have spent, each, € 177.14, which divided by the 17 days of stay are € 10.42 on average per day, thus broken down:

  • Food: daily average of 4,05€. The offer of Thai food is spectacular, you can eat quietly from 35-40 baht, a eurito, in street stalls, while in restaurants the price rises although it is still very cheap.
  • Accommodation: daily average of € 3.68. On average a double room with bathroom costs between 200-400 baht, about 5-10 euros, cheaper options are sharing a bathroom, or staying in common bedrooms, the quality-price of the accommodations is sensational). * We have only slept 15 nights in hotel: one night we spent it by night bus, and on the last day of the trip we crossed the border to Laos, so we slept there of course!
  • Transport: daily average of 2,44€. We have included here both bus tickets, train, motorcycle rental, tuk-tuk ... if you travel as a local, getting around is very cheap!
  • Miscellaneous: daily average of 0,62€ (tickets to temples, various purchases).

Some reference prices

  • Coca-Cola 15-20 baht
  • Water 7-10 baht
  • Barbecue skewers 5-20 baht
  • Big beer 50-80 baht
  • Motorcycle rental 100-250 baht
  • Dish rice-noodles 35-50 baht
  • Western food dish 100-200 baht
  • Liter gasoline 35-40 baht
  • Internet 30-40 baht / h (there is a large offer of free wifi in restaurants / hotels so it is not worth going to a cyber)

THE BEST AND THE WORST

This is one of our favorite sections, here we tell you anecdotes of the trip, personal sensations of the place, things that we have loved but also that we have not liked anything ... in short summary of our passage through Thailand

+ The best

  • That at 08.00 am and 06.00 pm the national anthem sounds and everyone stands still and standing showing respect (we live it at the train station and in a night market).
  • The food: good pretty and cheap!
  • The value of the accommodations, amazing!
  • See the choreographies of the improvised dancers of all ages in the Chiang Rai market.
  • The fabulous White Temple, an architectural madness like no other.
  • That there are still people with authentic smiles.
  • The magical night we have lived in Chiang Mai, during the festival of Loy Krathong.
  • The Chinese town near Pai, with its views and its atmosphere (with the women of the tribe dancing the reaggeton !!).
  • The markets and temples of Chiang Mai.
  • Having a brilliant idea that will make us rich for a few weeks (but absolutely top secret! Hehe).
  • Plain roti, a kind of crepe with condensed milk that costs 20 cent!
  • Find a hotel for € 10 and swim all afternoon in his little pool (Fran if you read me I know you're proud of me).
  • The street pad thai on Rambuttri Road in Bangkok, the best pad thai ever eaten and at € 1.
  • The pizza that we have left at the Girasole Restaurant in Chiang Mai, authentic Italian and very good: ham and provolone, I still dream at night (although the panna & spek is still in the first position).

- Worst

  • Sex tourism that is seen every hour and anywhere.
  • The moral shock we had when moving from Myanmar to Thailand, I think that during the first hours we wanted to catch a plane back to Burma.
  • The amount of tourists there are (well ... we are two more!).
  • Seeing Bangkok flooded, the landscape was truly bleak, but it seems that now the critical situation has already passed.
  • Running out of gas in the middle of the mountain in Pai (it has not been fun but ...)
  • The feeling that sometimes you are a dollar with legs.
  • Losing myself in the Chiang Rai market, I thought that roby had left me escaping with the few remaining baht.
  • To catch the Bangkok-Chiang Mai bus at a Kao San Road agency, we were just tourists on the bus (and see that the Lonely Planet let us know!).
  • The animal exploitation that they do in general throughout the country, but especially in the area of Chiang Mai.
