We often receive messages from people who are going to travel to Italy for the first time with the idea of making the most of their time. For those who are in this situation and looking for an optimized itinerary to visit Italy visiting as many sites as possible, here goes thistwo-week travel itinerary to Italy. But we will notify you now: you will have to give it a lot of work!

In the lucky case that you have more time (say, for example, one more week) there are two options:

  • Add the occasional cultural destination, especially from the northern part of the country. Turin, Verona, Padua or Bologna are good options.
  • You can choose to explore more of southern Italy and bet on its beaches. In this case we recommend Puglia or a trip within the trip to Sicily.

Travel tips:

Buy train tickets on the websites of Trenitalia or Italotreno
Book accommodation with Booking.com
Plan your guided visits in Civitatis
Rent the car on the Autoeurope website

Now, without further ado we will tell you what, for us, is the best travel itinerary to Italy, for those who visit it for the first time and have approximately two weeks of time:

We do not see a better alternative to start your adventure in Italy than visiting its most romantic city: Venice. The first day you can spend it crossing its streets between the mythical canals, hallucinating with Piazza San Marco, tasting its cicchetti and ending the day wandering in the light of the lanterns.

The next day take a vaporetto (the public ferry from Venice) to go to the colorful island of Burano, which is worth a visit.

From Venice you can easily reach Milan by train: one day (or even half) is enough to see the main charms of this city, often little valued by travelers (it is not easy to excel when your “competitors” are Florence, Rome or Venice). But believe us: rarely in life will you see a prettier cathedral than the Duomo.

On the fourth day if you are charged, take a train to Como (or better yet rent a car) and take a tour of one of the most famous and beautiful lakes in the world. If you think it is very rushed, you can always join a guided day tour from Milan.

Take a train from Milan to Monterosso, the first town of the Cinque Terre (Five Lands). One day is little but if you get away and arrive early, you can make a route through the 5 most famous villages in Liguria: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. Each with its charm, but all of colorful houses and on top of some cliffs that rush into the sea ... absolutely amazing!

Tip: if you decide to spend the night in Cinque Terre, the ideal is to stay in Monterosso, which is the town with the most hotel offer and with the most movement of all.

The next destination is Tuscany! One of the most beautiful regions in all of Italy. Pisa can be seen quietly in a couple of hours, so take the rest of the afternoon to get to Florence and start suffering from Stendhal syndrome. On the seventh day of travel, dedicate it entirely to this beautiful city.

→ One-day tour of Pisa→ What to see and do in Florence in one or two days

If you feel like renting a car in Italy, this is the best time: there are not many places like Tuscany, believe us, in addition the traffic will not be the madness of other areas. Although the roadtrip through Tuscany is done in 3 or 4 days, you can always visit the most important places,

If you prefer to travel by public transport, know that it is not quite simple. Although you can not miss visits to San Gimignano (medieval Manhattan) and Siena. Both cities can be reached by bus.

→ The best of San Gimignano
→ What to do in Siena in one day
→ Roadtrip through Tuscany

What to say about Rome, the capital of Italy and the old Roman Empire? Well, it's a pa-sa-da: walking through its streets is like going back centuries and centuries in time. He conquered us from the first visit with his combination of history, art gastronomy. Since then it has won the number 1 of our favorite cities.

If in Rome you have already taken a few kilos, be prepared to continue getting fat because in southern Italy it is what goes: eat, eat and eat. Although you will not fill the stomach, also the soul: in Italy we say "Vedi Napoli e muori" (you see Naples and you die) to show that few things will make you sigh of love after seeing Naples. And his pizza. Aiiiins the Neapolitan pizza: an addiction.

Do not miss an excursion to Pompeii and a mini-route through the Amalfi Coast. The ideal would be to have more days, but even with one you can visit one of the main corners of this part of the Mediterranean coast, such as the island of Capri.

→ The best to see and do in Naples
→ Excursion to Pompeii
→ Excursion to Capri

Are you sure you want to leave? Ok, your feet will be very sore and your belly will have gained volume, but ah that Italy is great? That said, if you can add some time and keep touring my country, but don't worry ... we all end up coming back again and again (me because if not my parents would kill me, but also because it is one of the most beautiful countries in the world ... or not?).

Did you like this 2-week travel itinerary to Italy? Hopefully yes and the super job we gave you ... worth it! Before leaving, do not forget to read these tips for traveling to Italy (and not screw it up).
