As we anticipate, in Rome there are two airports: Fiumicino and Ciampino. Let's see how to get to the center from each of them:

:: Fiumicino: You have these options:

  • By train, with the lineLeonardo express (Direct to Rome Termini in 30 minutes and more expensive: € 14) or the line FL1 of regional trains (slower with several stops, one in Roma Tiburtina, and a price of € 8). You can buy the ticket at the station or online at the trenitalia website.
  • By bus, there are several companies that offer the journey to Rome Termini, for approximately € 5-7. You don't need to book the ticket. Some are Terravision or Shiaffini. The journey takes approximately 55 minutes. If you want to save time you can buy your ticket online, here.
  • By taxi or private transport, the fixed fare to the center of Rome by taxi (including all supplements) is € 48. You have the option of private transport, with welcome service at the airport for € 50.

:: Ciampino: is where Ryanair and Wizzair fly. To get to the center of Rome you have these options:

  • By bus + train, the airport does not have a train station, so you will have to go to Ciampino station. There are buses every 30 minutes that cost € 1.20 and take 5 minutes. From there to Roma Termini there are regionals that take 15 minutes and cost € 1.50. It is not necessary to book the ticket. More info.
  • By bus + subway, another option is to go by bus to the Anagnina metro station (€ 1.20) and from there take the MA subway line that makes different stops, including Termini (€ 1.50). It is slower than the previous one.
  • By urban bus + subway: use the 720 urban bus line to the Laurentina metro station (MB) and from there the subway to the center. The € 1.50 ticket is valid for both routes! You can also take line 520 to the MA Subaugusta and Cinecittà metro stops and then the metro, the same for € 1.50.
  • By bus, as for Fiumicino, several companies have this service at a similar price of between € 5-6. You can take a look at Terravision or Shiaffini. The journey takes about 40 minutes. Book tickets online and save time.
  • By taxi or private transport, the fixed fare to the center of Rome by taxi (including all supplements) is € 30. You have the option of private transport, with welcome service at the airport for € 50.

We always recommend go on foot, Rome has to be discovered at street level, with a direct contact with the locals, stopping to take a photo in a secret corner or to buy a Sicilian cannolo.

But if you need to make long journeys or have little time, urban buses They are the best option. It is true that traffic is crazy in Rome and that buses lately have not very good reputation, but we opted for this option because of the limited network of the metro.

Tickets cost € 1.50 and you can buy them at any tobacconist or newspaper stand. When you get on the bus you will have to ring them on the machine.

But be careful, if you agree that you have a subway near where you are and where you want to go, it is sure to be the fastest and most comfortable way (buses usually go quite stuck).

The Rome metro It has three lines right now, although you are interested in A (orange) and B (blue). The C is under construction for a lifetime and currently has only stations on the periphery. Both intersect in Termini. The price of the ticket is € 1.50 and you can buy it at the machines of each station.

Wikipedia

There is transport vouchers 24 hours (€ 7), 48 hours (€ 12.50), 72 hours (€ 18) and one week (€ 24). You can buy them at the metro stations and they are valid for both the metro and buses, within the metropolitan area of Rome. More info.

For calculate the path and know what transport to take, it is best that you use Google Maps, it is usually the one that works best. There is also Moovit's.

These are the options to reach the center of Rome from the airport (Fiumicino and Ciampino). And the ways to get around the city. We hope it helps you in planning your trip!
